Temporary Things

Victoria Mils

you hold my coffee when my hands won’t stop shaking.

you remind me the world won’t end just because my voice is breaking.

you walk on the traffic side of the sidewalk

and pretend it’s no big deal.

you say it’s “just habit,”

but i think we both know it’s how you show what you feel.

i talk too much, you listen too well,

you grin like you’re in on some secret i’d never tell.

i second-guess everything, you never do,

you say the world feels better when i’m next to you.

and when i fall apart over worries you’d outrun,

you hold me together,

like that’s the easiest thing you’ve ever done.

you peel the sticker off my apples because you know i always forget,

and you carry extra hair ties

‘cause you know i’ll lose mine by sunset.

you fix my jacket zipper every time it gets stuck,

then joke that you’re “charging me”

but never collect your luck.

you don’t write big speeches or grand declarations,

and don’t remind of your i love you’s all the time,

you just save me the last fry without hesitation,

and somehow that says more than any rhyme.

so to me, in a world full of temporary things,

you’re the one i plan to keep awhile,

like old days we can’t get back,

but that still make me smile.
