Many people try complicated morning routines, but most don’t stick. The habits that actually work are the ones that are easy to maintain and fit into a normal schedule. Social media often exaggerates perfect routines. Online, people act like every author wakes up at dawn to journal for an hour, sip green tea, and greet the muse from a pretty-viewed balcony. But remember, you don’t need a 15-step routine, a curated “writer aesthetic,” or a perfect stack of annotated books to be a real writer.
Here are ten practical habits that can make mornings more productive.
1. Wake Up 10 Minutes Earlier To Read Or Write
You don’t need an extreme early wake-up time. Ten extra minutes with a notebook or a book can spark ideas before the world intrudes.
2. Avoid Checking Your Electronic Devices Right Away
Try to wait at least five minutes before going on your phone. This prevents you from getting distracted immediately and helps you start your day with a clearer mind. Let your mind linger in your story world, as a couple minutes with imagination can set the tone for the whole day.
3. Drink Water Before Coffee or Energy Drinks
Hydrating first thing can improve your focus and help you wake up more naturally, perfect for focusing on that paragraph, chapter, or plot twist before the caffeine hits.
4. Write a Short To-Do List
Limit yourself to three writing or reading goals for the day. It could be a page, a chapter, or reading a set number of pages. This makes your goals clearer and more achievable. You don’t have to have a huge list of 20 things to accomplish that day, take everything step by step.
5. Open Your Blinds or Curtains While Reading or Writing
Exposure to natural light helps regulate your internal clock and signals to your brain that it’s time to be awake. This can also make your desk or reading nook feel perfect for sketching, annotating, or drafting scenes.
6. Move for One Minute
You don’t need a full workout. Stretching or walking around your room for a minute can help you feel more alert before sitting down to do your writing for the day.
7. Eat Something Small
Even if you’re not hungry, eating a quick snack like fruit or a granola bar gives you energy to start the day and fuel your brain for creative energy.
8. Lay Out Your Outfit the Night Before
Choosing clothes in advance saves time and reduces stress in the morning.
9. Put Your Alarm Across the Room
This forces you to get out of bed to turn it off, making it harder to fall back asleep.
10. Make Your Bed & Tidy Your Work Space
It takes less than a minute and makes your room feel more organized.
